This is the Virginia Metalcrafters “Hunter” cast-iron horse doorstop, designed by Calvin Roy Kinstler and copyrighted in 1949. Contemporary copyright records specifically list Kinstler’s Hunter doorstop as a sculpture copyrighted by Virginia Metalcrafters, and surviving examples are documented with the “HUNTER” title, Virginia Metalcrafters markings, and Kinstler’s CRK initials.
*The dark cast-iron surface retains an aged, timeworn patina with areas of wear and oxidation that emphasize the molded details and give the piece a strong decorative presence.
